UN doubtful if those responsible for E-Timor violence will be brought

The United Nations Human Rights Commission President says he is unsure
whether Indonesia's judicial system will really bring to justice those
responsible for a bloody rampage in East Timor in 1999.

Leandro Despouy, on an official visit to Jakarta, warned President Megawati
Sukarnoputri that the international community was closely monitoring her
government's progress in bringing those responsible to justice.

Three generals, accused of human rights violations before and after the
1999 ballot in East Timor, are among the 19 suspects scheduled to be tried
for their role in fomenting the bloodshed.

Even though the trials were first scheduled to open in December, they have
been postponed twice.

Last year, six men who murdered three UN staffers in Indonesian-controlled
West Timor in September, 2000, were given sentences of between 10 and 20
months for their crime.

The jail terms were only increased last week after intense international
pressure.
