TNI trial underway in Dili Court

The Speical Panel for Serious Crimes at the Dili District Court today opened the trial against a former TNI officer, the first officer to be tried for crimes committed during the TNI/Militia violence in East Timor in 1999. The officer, who is of East Timorese origin, was a member of the Indonesian military intelligence "Intel", and is charged of ordering the murder of a Timorese who was later stabbed to death by the militias.
The TNI officer has pleaded not guilty. It is expected that the trial will last for three days.
