PRISON SYSTEM ASSESSMENT

A multi-donor mission assessing the needs of the Timor-Leste
prison
system is underway with the cooperation of UNDP, UNMISET, donors and the
Government.
Participants include Vice Minister for Justice Domingos
Sarmento and
representatives from UNDP, UNMISET Human Rights, UNPOL, TLPS, the
Geneva-based Centre for International Crime Prevention, the Canadian
Prison Service, the Portuguese Prison Service and the New Zealand Penal
System.
The mission visited Baucau today and is expected to conclude
its work on
26 October.
A similar exercise will take place in late October and early November
to
access the training and logistic requirement of Timor-Leste Police
Services.
